Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden\u2019s Homily on the Eighth Sunday of Matthew"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. George Cathedral of Stockholm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday, July 26, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s Gospel places before us the miracle of the multiplication of the five loaves and the two fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great multitude has followed Christ into a deserted place. The people are tired and hungry, and evening is approaching. The disciples see the difficulty and offer a practical solution: \u201cSend the multitude away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Christ answers: \u201cThey do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ looked upon the multitude with compassion. He did not see an anonymous crowd. He saw persons; each with suffering, weakness, hope, and need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gomos.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/758092861_997136976659995_1148176292117650884_n.jpeg?resize=700%2C698&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5524\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compassion of Christ becomes action. He heals the sick, teaches the people, and feeds the hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christ does not ask us to possess everything. He asks us to offer what we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five loaves are insufficient while they remain only in human hands. But when they are offered to Christ, they become the beginning of abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lord takes the bread, looks up to heaven, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to the disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These actions remind us of the Holy Eucharist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At every Divine Liturgy, we offer bread and wine\u2014simple gifts from creation and human labor. God receives them and returns them to us as the Body and Blood of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel tells us that Christ gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people. In the same way, our time, abilities, possessions, and spiritual gifts are not given only for ourselves. They are entrusted to us so that they may become a blessing for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kind word may become bread for someone who is discouraged. A visit may become bread for someone who is lonely. Patient listening may become bread for a troubled person. Forgiveness may become bread for a divided family. Prayer may become bread for someone who has lost hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot solve every problem in the world. But we must not use our limitations as an excuse for indifference. Nothing offered to Him with faith and love is insignificant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May the Lord give us compassionate hearts and open hands, to become instruments of His love in the world.
