Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today’s Gospel presents the disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee while their boat is being battered by the waves and the wind is against them.
Christ has remained behind in prayer, and during the darkest hours of the night, He comes to them, walking upon the sea.
Saint John Chrysostom observes that the Lord does not immediately end their trial, because He wishes to strengthen their faith and teach them patient endurance.
Christ may sometimes appear to be absent during the storms of our lives, yet He is never unaware of our suffering. He sees the struggling boat, He knows the fear of His disciples, and He approaches at the moment when His presence is most needed, saying, “Take heart; it is I; do not be afraid.”
Our peace, therefore, does not depend upon the absence of difficulties, but upon the presence of Christ.

A faith that has never been tested may remain superficial; a faith purified through suffering becomes steadfast and mature. The storms of illness, loneliness, uncertainty, bereavement, and disappointment can easily overwhelm us. Yet the Lord comes to us through prayer, the Holy Scriptures, the Divine Liturgy, and the loving presence of our brothers and sisters in the Church.
While his attention remains fixed upon the Lord, Peter walks over the waves. But when he notices the violence of the wind, fear enters his heart, and he begins to sink. The wind has not become stronger; what has changed is the direction of Peter’s attention. When we look only at our problems, our fears grow larger, and our faith becomes smaller. When we turn again toward Christ, we discover that His grace is greater than every wave that threatens us.
Peter cries out, “Lord, save me!” The boat may be shaken, but it will not be abandoned; the night may be long, but Christ is already approaching; and even when our faith fails, His saving hand remains extended toward us.
Therefore, let us not allow fear to have the final word. Let us keep our eyes fixed upon Christ and remain within the boat of His Holy Church, nourished by prayer and repentance. Amen!
