H.E. Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden’s Homily on the Exaltation of the Precious Cross

Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, the Church celebrates the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. The Cross is raised before our eyes so that we may venerate it with faith and recognize in it the mystery of God’s boundless love for humanity.

In the ancient world, the cross was an instrument of humiliation, suffering, and death. Through Christ, however, it became the sign of victory, salvation, and eternal life. Upon the Cross, the sinless Son of God willingly offered Himself for the life of the world. By His death, He destroyed death; by His wounds, He healed our wounded nature; and by His Resurrection, He opened to us the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Saint Paul declares that, although the message of the Cross appears foolish to the world, “to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” The Cross overturns the logic of this world. It teaches us that true power is revealed in self-sacrificing love, true glory in humility, and true victory in faithful obedience to God.

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem urges Christians never to be ashamed of the Cross, but to make its sign boldly and with faith. The Cross, he teaches, is not a disgrace but our crown and our protection.

Saint John Chrysostom likewise reminds us that the Apostle Paul gloried in the Cross because through it the immeasurable love of God was revealed; the Lord of glory accepted suffering in order to reconcile us to Himself and restore us to life.

When we venerate the Cross, therefore, we do not honor suffering for its own sake. We worship Christ, who transformed suffering through love and death through His Resurrection. The Cross assures us that God is present even in the darkest moments of our lives. No sorrow, illness, injustice, or trial is beyond the reach of His saving grace.

Yet the Cross is also a calling. Every sincere act of love, every hidden sacrifice, and every struggle against sin becomes a participation in the mystery of the Cross.

As we behold the Cross raised before us today, let us chant: “We venerate Your Cross, O Master, and we glorify Your Holy Resurrection.” Amen!
