H.E. Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden’s Homily on the 6th Sunday of Luke

Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today’s Gospel presents the healing of the demon-possessed man in the country of the Gadarenes. He lived naked, isolated from society, and among the tombs—a vivid image of how evil destroys communion, and leads toward spiritual death.

Yet Christ crossed the lake to seek this suffering man personally. The Lord never abandons anyone, however wounded or enslaved that person may be. Where others saw a hopeless case, Christ saw a human being created in the image of God, worthy of healing, freedom, and restoration.

The Fathers of the Church teach that the demons could not enter even the herd of swine without Christ’s permission, revealing that their power is limited and entirely subject to God’s authority.

After his deliverance, the man was found “clothed and in his right mind, sitting at the feet of Jesus.”

The people of that region, however, valued their material possessions more than the salvation of their neighbor and asked Christ to leave. Their reaction challenges us to examine whether we truly welcome Christ into our lives, or keep Him at a distance, whenever His presence calls us to change.

The healed man wished to remain with Jesus, but the Lord sent him home, saying, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” This is also the calling of every Christian.

We are invited to bear witness to God’s mercy, not only through words, but especially through lives transformed by grace—from turmoil to peace, from isolation to communion, and from sin to repentance.

May we never ask Christ to depart from us, but instead welcome Him into our hearts, sit humbly at His feet, and proclaim with gratitude all that He has done for us. Amen!
